Jim Harbaugh, a former Michigan quarterback, remembers how coach Bo Schembechler used to emphasize the rivalry against Ohio State.

"It was like you were preparing for that game 365 days a year," Harbaugh said.

Ohio State-Michigan is one of college football greatest rivalries, and while Cal-Stanford Football doesn't approach that level, there is plenty of good history. The series, which dates to 1892, is tied for the ninth-longest in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

"I would characterize it as very, very intense, but not a bitter rivalry," Harbaugh said.

He added some history to the rivalry last season in his first year at Stanford. The Cardinal ended five years of losing to Cal with a 20-13 upset victory.
